Professional Biography:
Tracy Mitrano, Ph.D., J.D.
 

Dr. Mitrano facilitated the creation of some of higher education’s first generation information security policies as the Director of Information Technology Policy at Cornell University between 2001 and 2014. Her expertise is widely recognized in higher education, government, and the private sector. She has acted as an expert for Internet2, University of Massachusetts, University of Delaware, Tufts University, SafeGov, New York Public Library, and many others.

Dr. Mitrano has held numerous teaching appointments, including Visiting Professor of Law and Communications at John Cabot University in Rome, Italy, and at Ithaca College’s Executive Master’s Program in Ithaca, New York. She also taught Culture, Law, and Politics of the Internet at Cornell University, Constitutional History at Syracuse University, American Social History at the University of Buffalo, and Internet Law at Universita Cattolica in Piacenza, Italy.


Her passion for advancing information technology policy in higher education spans many years in leadership roles, including as the co-director of Cornell University’s Institute for Internet Culture, Policy, and Law (2001-2016) and co-chair of the Internet2/EDCAUSE Security Taskforce (2001-2005). Actively involved with EDUCAUSE, Dr. Mitrano was a member of the Board of Directors (2006-2010), Treasurer (2007), Secretary (2007), and Vice President (2009).

As the director of the EDUCAUSE Hawkins Leadership Roundtable, she also served on the faculty of:

Dr. Mitrano is a popular conference speaker and organizer. In 2014, she was a key-note speaker at the American University in Beirut and in 2013, she was an invited speaker at the International Conference on Piracy and Counterfeiting sponsored by the U.S. Consulate in Florence, Italy. She is also the co-organizer of the Higher Education Privacy Conference, an annual event focusing on privacy and information management in higher education, now in its fifth year.
